Roy McCombs

Pontotoc

Roy O’Niel McCombs, 62, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam. He enjoyed building, fishing and cutting up with his friends. He loved to work in the garden.

Services were Thursday, Feb. 4, at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc with Bro. Wes Stephens officiating. Burial was in Cherry Creek Cemetery.

Survivors include his life partner of 25 years, Annie Faye McCombs; one stepdaughter, Teresa Adams; two stepsons, Jimmy McClure and James McClure Jr.; one stepgranddaughter, Jennifer Harris; five stepgrandsons, Justin Harris, Cory McClure, Jamie McClure, Andy McClure and Cris McClure; one stepgranddaughter, Jennifer Harris; one stepgreat-grandson, Ethan Harris; two sisters, Linda Williams of Hurricane and Sheryl Stauffer of Runnells, Iowa; two brothers, Randy McCombs of Pontotoc and Terry McCombs of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and his stepfather, W.C. Osbirn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy McCombs and Earline McCombs-Osbirn; two brothers, Danny McCombs and Phillip McCombs; one sister, Jane McCombs; and a sister-in-law, Patricia McCombs.

Pallbearers were Rickey Mask, Jamie McClure, Tommy Walker, Billy Walker, Channing Owen and Cory McClure.

Robert Simon Jr.

West Point

Robert Simon Jr. died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Services were Sunday, Feb. 7, at West Grove M.B. Church in Houlka. Burial followed in Cane Creek Cemetery. Carter Funeral Home of West Point was in charge of the arrangements.

Jan Moorman

Pontotoc

Edith Jan Byars Moorman, 59, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, in Pontotoc. She was born and reared in Houlka, and graduated from Houlka High School. She attended Midway Baptist Church and Toxish Baptist Church. She was payroll clerk at Washington Furniture and Kensington Furniture in Pontotoc, and at United Furniture in Okolona. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Services were Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc with Joy Lucius officiating. Burial was in Macedonia Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Earl David Moorman; three children, Edward Moorman (Catherine), Amanda Waldo (John Sr.) and Marcye Moorman, all of Pontotoc; nine grandchildren, Elijah Moorman, Erik Moorman, Jacob Moorman, Angus Moorman, Calvin Moorman, Timothy Robbins, John Waldo Jr., Holley Waldo and Caleb Waldo, all of Pontotoc; three stepgrandchildren, Alicia West of Pontotoc, Richard West and Brian West of Iuka; one nephew, David Byars (Brandy), and two nieces, Genger Byars and Thomasina Byars, all of Houston; one great-nephew and five great-nieces.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Edith Laverne Farr Byars; her father, Thomas Evans Byars Sr.; and a brother, Thomas Evans Byars Jr.

Pallbearers were Ricky Collums, Clifton Harlow, Terry Rackley, Elijah Moorman and Erik Moorman.

Rev. Ruby Newbill

New York City

The Rev. Ruby Faye Knox Newbill, 62, died at her home in New York City. Formerly of Chickasaw County, she was the daughter of the Rev. Clinton Knox Sr. and Margie McKinney Knox. She was the pastor of Mt. Moriah Church in New York City.

Services were Thursday, Feb. 4, at West Grove M.B. Church in Houlka. The Rev. Joey Reel delivered the eulogy. Burial was in Cane Creek Cemetery in Pittsboro. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc was in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by one son, Reuben Newbill of New York City; her father, the Rev. Clinton Knox Sr. of Memphis; two brothers, the Rev. Clyde (JoAnn) Knox of Houlka and Clinton Jr. (Debbie) Knox of Memphis; one sister, Inella Knox (Larry Sr.) Scruggs of Memphis.

Mike Wood

Ecru

Michael Gene ‘Mike’ Wood, 59, died Thursday Feb. 4, 2010, at the University Medical Center in Jackson. He was retired from sales and a Veteran of the Army Reserve. A member of the Baptist Faith, he was born March 30,1950, in Pontotoc County to William A. and Cora Bell McLaughlin Wood. He was a graduate of Ecru High School, where he was an avid football player earning the nickname, ‘Heavy,’ from his team mates.

Services were Monday, Feb. 8, at Horton Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Charlie Swords and the Rev. Owen Hitchcock officating. A private burial was at Shady Grove Cemetery. Kesler Funeral Home of Baldwyn was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Swords (Hub) and Carolyn Pannell (Bobby), both of Ecru; two brothers, David Wood (Helen) of New Albany and Alton Wood of Grenada; one sister-in-law, Diane Wood of Fulton; five nephews, Ferrel Swords, Eddie Swords, Andrew Wood, David Wood and Roger Wood; seven nieces, Darlene Robinson, Anita McMillen, Cheryl Kilough, Susan Babin, Anne Hershfelt, Lisa Wood and Rhonda Sellers; and a very, very good friend, Michael Roberts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Tom Wood.

Travis E. Dye

Clinton

Mr. Travis Dye, 80, died Saturday, Feb 6, 2010 of a massive stroke at Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 9. All services were at Parkway Baptist Church in Clinton. Burial followed at Lakewood Memorial Park in Clinton.

Mr. Dye was a graduate of Ole Miss and a proud member of the Marine Corp. during the Korean War. He was active with the Civitan Club and Gideons. He served as Deacon at Parkway Baptist Church and the Sunday School teacher for the Friendship Class. Mr. Dye was formerly a teacher/coach and principal of schools in Northeast Mississippi. He worked for 40 years as a Right Of Way professional and was President of Right Of Way Technology, Inc.

He is survived by his wife, Betty (McAlpin) Dye and children as follows: Gina Holland, Tina Boone (Ken) and Mark Dye (Romana). Grandchildren: Lacey Holland, Ryan, Tyler and Holly Boone, Austin, Mabry and Greyson Dye. Great granddaughter: Caleigh Holland. He is also survived by one sister, Connie Huey of Memphis and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Dye was preceded in death by sisters: Clytee McNabb and Carolyn Howard. Brothers: Otis, Claudis, G.W., James Dorsey, and Donald Dye.

C.B. Boland

Tupelo

C.B. Boland, 90, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. A Chickasaw County native, he was born Jan. 9, 1920, to Charlie Bethel and Bessie Lee Wilder Boland. He was a retired Cheif Commissaryman for the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service, where he was in combat during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. In World War II, he served from May of 1942, to December of 1943, aboard the Battle Ship USS Massachusetts, known as ‘Big Mamie’ to her crewmembers. From May 1944, to July 1946, he served aboard the USS A.B. SD-4 (an advanced based sectional dry-dock). He also served aboard several other service vessels during his Naval career including the USS Brownson, USS Daniel A. Joy, USS Farmington, and the USS Ault.

After the war, while serving on the USS Ault, he circumnavigated the globe on a goodwill peace mission. At the conclusion of his military career, he worked a number of years with the bureau of prisons. He later managed the cafeteria of the Tupelo Campus of Itawamba Junior College and was a chef with Vernon's Steakhouse. He was married to Margaret K. ‘Peggy’ Boland, who preceded him in death on July 24, 2004. He was a longtime member of the Tupelo Luncheon Civitan Club. For a number of years he volunteered in food preparation for Meals-on-Wheels. He enjoyed playing and coaching shuffleboard and winning at dominoes. He was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church.

Services were Tuesday, Feb. 9, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. David Langerfeld and Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. A eulogy was given by his brother, Wiley Boland. Burial with full military honors was in Zion Cemetery.

Survivors include one sister, Callie B. Young of Pontotoc; one brother, Wiley N. Boland and his wife, Juanita of the Zion Community; and a number of neices and nephews; and a number of great-neices and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Elva McCleskey and Erin Ray; three brothers, Noel Boland, Rev. Leroy Boland and Cecil Boland.

Pallbearers were Bobby Johnson, Randy Young, Ronny Young, Jay Young, Nathan Young and Nicholas Young.

Judy Sanford

Belden

Judy Lynn Sanford, 53, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She became a Christian at an early age. She enjoyed arts and crafts.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc with Bro. Tootie Ward officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include her mother, Eunice Faye Sanford; three daughters, Tracey Lynn Sanford, Tara Faye Sanford and Aimee Young; one brother, Donald R. Sanford; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Casey R. Sanford; three brothers, Charles R. Sanford, Jerry Wayne Sanford and Casey R. Sanford Jr.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from noon to service time Thursday.

Delores Toy

Blue Springs

Delores Speck Toy, 81, went home to Jesus Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born Nov. 30, 1928, in Ellistown to the late William “Bill” Speck and Lottie Pannell Speck of Ellistown. She lived in California and Arizona before returning home with her family to Blue Springs in 1977 to lovingly care for her brother, Vey Speck.

She worked at Montgomery Ward for many years, and was a supervisor and faithful employee of Days Detectives and Securitas Security Services for 15 years. She was a lifetime member of the VFW 4057 Ladies Auxiliary; Ladies member of the Lee County Shriners with her husband who is past president; and a member of Center Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, spending time with her family, gardening and her cat, Tippy.

Services were Sunday, Feb. 7, at United Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Buster Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Vista Memorial Park. United Funeral Service in New Albany was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Raymond Toy of Blue Springs; two daughters, Carolyn Calley (Don) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Deanna Lineberry (David) of Blue Springs; a son, Michael Toy (Keely) of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Mary B. Speck Coleman of Utah; four grandchildren, Nick Lineberry (Ashley), Kelly Lineberry, Kody Damour and Seth Calley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margarette Speck Hortence; and three brothers, Vey Speck, Holder Speck and Pete Pannell.

Pallbearers were members of the VFW 4057, Terry Carlock, Grover Powell, O'neal Bailey, Paul Gibbs, Jack Taylor of Securitas and grandson, Nick Lineberry.

David McShan

Pontotoc

David D. “Sonny” McShan died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. A native of Pontotoc County, he was the son of Charlie McShan Sr. and Murkery Crudup McShan.

Services were Friday, Feb. 5, at Wilson Chapel M.B. Church in Pontotoc. The Rev. Colbert Graham delivered the eulogy. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Lessie McShan of Pontotoc; seven daughters, Sylvia Berry of Verona, Kathy Sangester of Milwaukee, Wis., Barbara Watkins and Melody Pinson of Pontotoc, Stephanie (Tyrone) Owens of Rockford, Ill., Tenna (Vincent) Sandlin and Vickie Cole of Beloit, Wis.; one sister, Barbara (Benjamin) Eades of Pontotoc; one brother, Charlie (Mira) McShan of Beloit, Wis.; four sisters-in-law, Julia (Billy) Johnson of Union City, Tenn., Ethel Cole of Pontotoc, and Patricia Floyd and Jeannette Cole of Beloit, Wis.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Lottie Addison

Tupelo

Lottie Irene McCarty Addison, 96, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was an active member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Services were Friday, Feb. 5, at Macedonia Baptist Church with Bro. Terry Faulkner officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery at Belden. United Funeral Service of New Albany was in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Westbrook (Milton) of Belden; one son, Nelson Addison (Mary) of Tupelo; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Rosie Johnson

Okolona

Rosie Lee Johnson, 100, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

A native of Chickasaw County, she was the daughter of Oscar Moore and Amy Whitfield Moore. She loved reading, cooking and quilting. She was a member of Eastern Star M.B. Church and a lifelong member of Heroines of Jericho, Okolona Court 122.

Service were Monday, Feb. 8, at Eastern Star M.B. Church in Okolona. The Rev. Anthony Rainey delivered the eulogy. Burial was in Okolona Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc was in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by 22 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Bonnie Curry

Pontotoc

Bonnie Curry, 81, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at Graceland Care Center in New Albany after a short illness. A native of Los Angeles, Calif., she was born Aug. 13, 1928, to Warren and Ruth Cady Cox. She was the office manager for the Furniture Market until October 2009. A resident of Pontotoc, she had previously lived in Saltillo for 20 years.

Graveside services were Saturday, Feb. 6, at Lee Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Forsythe of Pontotoc; two grandchildren, Tony Forsythe (Suzanne) and Rene Forsyth, all of Pontotoc; and three great-grandchildren; Randy, Katrina, and Erika Forsythe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Curry, and her parents.

Mary Ann Spencer

Oklahoma City, Okla.

Mary Ann Spencer was born November 20, 1939 in Sayre, Oklahoma to Helen Gay and Thomas Allan Bannister. She passed away February 4, 2010 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 70 years, 2 months and 14 days.

Mary Ann grew up in Odessa, Texas where she graduated from high school. She later moved to Ft. Worth, Texas where she worked as a beautician for 40 years. She was married to Jerry Spencer at Hood, Texas on October 4, 2002 and they made their home in Pontotoc, Mississippi. Mary Ann learned to drive a truck and she and Jerry traveled the country as a team for 7 years. Mary Ann enjoyed working in the yard and camping but most of all loved spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father and a sister-in-law, Cathy Bannister.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry, of the home; one son, David Hunter, Ft. Worth, Texas; four stepchildren, Gaye McGlofin, Pontotoc, Terrie Tutor, Pontotoc, Phillip Spencer, Pontotoc, Donny Spencer, Pontotoc; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her mother, Helen Bannister, Sayre, Okla.; two brothers, Bobby Bannister, Ft. Worth, Lanny Joe Bannister, Ft. Worth,; special friends, Sandra Kaye and Tony Tutor, Pontotoc, Mickey Dire, Ft. Worth,; one niece, Erin Smith, Ft. Worth,; one nephew, Bart Guiterras, Ft. Worth, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Peggie Payne

Peggie Jean Cannon Payne, 77, died Feb. 5, 2010, at her home surrounded by her family and friends. She was born March 29, 1932, in Pontotoc County to Everett Cannon and Era Gambrell Cannon. She was a housewife, a loving mother and grandmother and an avid reader. She was a member of the Blue Springs Baptist Church.

Services were at noon Monday, Feb. 8, at United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Neal Davis and the Rev. Tony Morrow officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery. United Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bobby J. Payne of Blue Springs; four sons, David Payne (Connie) of Corinth, Robert Payne (Donna) of Blue Springs, Henry Payne (Tmora) of Pontotoc and Andy Payne (Christy) of Blue Springs; five sisters, Charlotte Harlow of Pontotoc, Mittie Hart of Memphis, Sue Cannon of Pontotoc, Anita Boyd of Pontotoc and Gail Jenkins of Mo.; a brother, Russell Gillen of Pontotoc; 11 grandchildren, Brandon Payne, Derek Payne, Amber Payne, Gina Walker, Anna Payne, Glen Payne, Michelle Payne, Sylvia Payne, Morgan Payne, Spencer Payne and Drew Payne; and six great-grandchildren, Madison Payne, Bronson Payne, Johannon Payne, Jase Payne, Gavin Payne and Brinlee Rickman.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers were Brandon Payne, Derek Payne, Glen Payne, Spencer Payne, Lane Bramlett, Kevin Rackley, Randy Brown, Leland Terry, Allen Whitten and Ken Fooshee.

Jerry Parrish

Pontotoc

Jerry Keith Parrish, 74, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at his home. He was born March 6, 1935, to Herbert and Lois Parrish. He retired from A&T Parts and Rebuilding in 2001. He was an active member of Charity Baptist Church. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching games. He loved his family and he had a special love for his three great-grandchildren.

Services were Friday, Feb. 5, at Charity Baptist Church in Pontotoc. Bro. Marvin Ward and Bro. Jimmy Russell officiated. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sharon McCarver Parrish; one daughter, Regina Foster (Dyerl) of Ecru; one son, Steve Parrish (Twila) of Thaxton; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Jill Grubbs of Pontotoc; one grandson, Alan Parrish of Bruce; three great-grandchildren, Annasia, Austin and Aubree; four sisters, Marie Flemons (Wayne), Wilma Davis (Lonnie), Shirley Smith (Bill) and Linda Poindexter (Van), all of Southaven; three brothers, Herbert Wayne Parrish, Johnny Parrish (Laura) of Southaven, and Lynn Parrish (Derilyn) of Hernando; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Buddy Parrish and Bobby Parrish.

Pallbearers were Brian Jenkins, Richey Crew, Steve Brown, Billy Kidd, Bro. Donnie Finley and Charles Owens.
